According to the Danish paper Ekstrabladet there are is more donation then demand from red haired sperm donors. The largest sperm bank in the world, Cryos International, is reportedly having to turn down donations from red haired men as result.
A report in The Telegraph the most popular donor type has brown eyes and brown hair. Apparently there is high demand for red headed donors in Ireland but everywhere else there is little if any demand.
The director of Cryos, Ole Schou stated:
“There are too many redheads in relation to demand,” Schou explained to the publication. “I do not think you choose a redhead, unless the partner – for example, the sterile male – has red hair, or because the lone woman has a preference for redheads. And that’s perhaps not so many, especially in the latter case.”
Laura on Twitter offers an amusing take on this preference.
I wonder if there is a more serious issue of eugenics in this preference for certain pheno-types over others, or could this be a high tech version of natural selection? What do you think?
